Heutzutage ist der Bastler jener Mensch, der mit seinen Händen werkelt und dabei Mittel verwendet, die im Vergleich zu denen des Fachmanns abwegig sind. Die Eigenart des mythischen Denkens besteht nun aber darin, sich mit Hilfe von Mitteln auszudrücken, deren Zusammensetzung merkwürdig ist und die, obwohl viel umfassend, begrenzt bleiben; dennoch muss es sich ihrer bedienen, an welches Problem es auch immer herangeht, denn es hat nichts anderes zur Hand. Es erscheint somit als eine Art intellektueller Bastelei, was die Beziehungen, die man zwischen mythischem Denken und Bastelei beobachten kann, verständlich macht.

 

Nowadays, the hobbyist is the person who works with his hands, using means that are absurd compared to those of the professional. But the peculiarity of mythical thought consists in expressing itself with the help of means whose composition is strange and which, although comprehensive, remain limited; yet it must make use of them whatever problem it approaches, for it has nothing else at hand. It thus appears as a kind of intellectual tinkering, which makes understandable the relationships that can be observed between mythical thinking and tinkering.
